As the Rotary year comes to an end it is a time to reflect, and to plan for the future. Supporting youth in our community is one of our most enthusiastically supported activities and is close to the hearts of all our members.
This year we are proud to have to have been able to support many young people in our town and here are just a few of them.
Originally started by the Sherborne Rotary club, this is an opportunity for primary schools to entertain in front of an audience, and they delighted us all.
We are grateful to Hunts Foodservice of Sherborne who have sponsored for this event for many years.
Since the 2012 Olympic games Rotary in Sherobrne has been making two awards of £500 each to talented youngsters in Sherborne.
We are grateful to Alan Cummings at the Gryphon School for his continued support of these awards.
“The hardest thing they had ever done!” Comment after their three day expedition on Dartmoor, specially designed to give selected young people the opportunity to experience life changing challenges.
2019 was the first year that we have been involved with this Rotary District project and I am delighted that we were able to send 3 youngster on the course.
“Life changing” this was the comment from one of the participants who had already made changes to his future plans as a result of his participation in RYLA, when he came to visit our club last week. These three youngsters had clearly bonded as a team and were enthusiastic in telling the story of their experiences on Dartmoor.
We are grateful to June Alexander who has requested that money collected at Rotarian Peter’ Alexander’s funeral should be used to fund a RYLA student in 2020. “Peter was always associated with youth projects at Rotary and also loved the countryside. We therefore thought it would be appropriate for the money to go towards sponsoring a RYLA student”. (June Alexander)
