This event never disappoints and last night was no exception.
Congratulations to our winning team from The Gryphon School who asked the question “School Uniform – is it really necessary?” Having made some good reasons both for and against, they highlighted the potential need for a personal designer on nonuniform days, such is the strength of peer group pressure these days. This team will now go through to the next round of this national public speaking competition.
In second place was Sherborne Preparatory Schools’s team B who asked “Are books Extinct?” Apparently the average attention span is just 19 seconds, but is a little longer when reading a book.
Their colleagues in Sherborne Prep Team A were in third place with a well researched discussion on coincidence which concluded that lightning does strike more than once.
The team from Leweston School were highly commended with their talk “We don’t need no Education”, arguing that practical experience is probably better that being trained for examinations, and that we should follow the ancient Greeks who from primary school age, educated their children to be good citizens not to pass exams.
I am glad I was not a judge, as these were well reasoned presentations and I would have struggled to find a winner.
Well done to everyone involved, and thank you very much to our hosts Sherborne Preparatory School, and our adjudicators Mrs Alison Tremewan, Mrs Sally Westlotorn and Mrs Judith Spelman.
Hi Penny,
Thank you for that.
Just one point, Sally is Westlotorn, with o r n at the end. Everyone gets it wrong she tells me.
Will you contact the press, please ?
