Sherborne Town Band Benefits From Rotary Great Western 10K Run

President John handed over a cheque for £1,000 to the Sherborne Town Band in their Band Room on the Terrace last Friday the 27th June.

The donation was made up of funds presented to the club by Yeovil Town Road Running Club, from entry fees for the Rotary Great Western 10K Run, plus a top-up amount from our clubs charity fund. The donation comes at just the right time for the band as their heating boiler has broken down and needs to be replaced before the Autumn weather sets in.  Having completed the presentation the band treated John to one or two pieces of music they were practising for a concert they were due to give in Wells the following day.

President John handing over the cheque to Stuart Hunter the President of the Sherborne Town Band together with members of the Sherborne Town Band:
Front row [l-r] Conrad Yeadon – cornet, Megan Butler – cornet, Brigitte Butler – cornet, Alan Derrick – tuba and Kirsty Blencowe – tenor horn.
Back row [l-r] Keith Long – cornet, Stuart Butt – Euphonium, Helen Coombes – cornet, Gerald Butler – trombone, Mark Coombes – tuba, Tom Walker-Arnott – cornet, Michelle Hudson – flugel horn, John Gilham – cornet, Kevin Long – tenor horn.

Having been approached by the Sherborne Town Band for assistance, we were able to top up the amount raised from the Rotary Great Western 10K Run.   YTRRC are our partner for the event, and a cheque was presented to the club by Pete Jakeman, Lesley Nesbitt and Mel Dodge of the Yeovil Town Road Running Club at our diner meeting on the 16th June.   The topped-up donation will go a long way towards the cost of the new heating boiler the band so desperately needs.

The President of the Sherborne Town Band, Stuart Hunter thanked the Rotary Club of Sherborne Castles for their generosity in the bands hour of need and presented John with a CD recording of the band.

The presentation and ‘mini-concert’ afterwards turned out to be a fitting end to John’s busy year as president, coming as it did just three days before he handed over the presidency to Bruce.
