Sunday 25 August started cloudy but dry for the 39th Sherborne Historic Vehicle Rally (since its inception) and the 20th since Rotary have organised the event. Run by the combined Rotary Clubs of Sherborne, this annual event is held in the magnificent setting of Sherborne School Courts.
We had confirmed entries of 103 cars and light commercials together with 36 motorcycles, three-wheelers and motorcycle/sidecar combinations. All entrants are divided into classes according to year of manufacture: Veteran & Edwardian, Vintage, Post-vintage, Post-war, and Classic Sixties, plus for motorcycles a Classic Seventies class.
Many entrants take part in the optional 40-mile road run around the Dorset countryside starting at 11 a.m., just as the clouds decided to dump a heavy shower. In true British spirit this did not deter those taking part and a photographer was on hand to record the run with photographs available for purchase later in the day.
Fortunately the afternoon was warm and sunny, bringing out many members of the public to enjoy the spectacle of so many beautiful and fascinating old vehicles in the School Courts. The usual friendly and relaxed atmosphere in these historic surroundings was enjoyed by all, with a traditional ice cream seller, music from Sherborne Town Band, and refreshments available in The Hub, Sherborne School’s new cafe.
Once all vehicles had returned from the road run and the public started to arrive, judging took place to find a class winner for each category along with Most Original Car and Motorcycle. In addition, members of the public had their own votes for the most desirable car and motorcycle.
At the end of the afternoon, raffle prize draw tickets were drawn and Cups and Trophies announced and distributed to the various class winners. A special cup was presented to the occupants most suitably dressed to the age of their vehicle, the winning couple resplendent in their period dress.
Next year will see the 40th Sherborne Historic Vehicle Rally which we plan to make a very special and memorable event.
